New Jersey Medical Malpractice
When you visit your doctor for a medical condition you do so with a certain level of confidence and trust. In addition, if your doctor discovers you are suffering from a medical condition, unbeknownst to you, you are grateful you chose this doctor to take care of you. On the other hand, there are circumstances when the doctor that is supposed to help you, in fact, ends up harming you, either in a minor way or more seriously. If that happens then you are a victim of medical malpractice.
Types of Medical Malpractice
There are a few common types of medical malpractice and they include:
- Inaccurate diagnosis - this occurs when your doctor doesn’t diagnose your condition correctly. The diagnosis is the foundation for subsequent medical care so if it is incorrect the care you receive will also be incorrect, and quite possibly very dangerous.
- Incorrect medication – this could follow from an error in diagnosis. The medication could be completely wrong or the dose inaccurate. If your doctor prescribed more than one medication an error could be made with the assumption the medications can be taken together.
- Injuries during childbirth – injuries could affect both the mother and the baby and can result from inadequate pre-natal care, not recognizing signs the fetus is in distress, neglecting to test the fetus for genetic or physical abnormalities or poor care given to babies born prematurely.
- Errors during surgery – injuries can occur during the prep phase prior to surgery, or during surgery including accidentally injuring neighboring internal organs, incorrect type or dosage of anesthesia, or operating on a part of the body that is not supposed to be operated on.
- Anesthesia administration errors – serious injuries can occur if the anesthesiologist is not aware of previous medical conditions or doses incorrectly.
Medical malpractice cases are very hard to prove so you should consult with an experienced medical malpractice attorney. Your attorney will evaluate your case and advise you if it is prudent to file a lawsuit.
